Senator Elizabeth Warren’s campaign started off deliberately with her announcement speech on Monday morning.

After the speech, Warren was glad to have a bit of calm when she sat down to speak to me.

“I’m very excited to be running, I think that the candidacy speech went well.”

Some of the biggest issues to her personally are “working to restore the middle class and trying to fight corruption. So is climate change and addressing the opioid crisis.”

Warren, a member of the Democratic party, was a registered Republican in 1991, but changed parties because “the Democratic party has a much better set of ideals and goals, working towards creating equality, and fair government that works for everyone.”

She also believes that she can represent everyday Americans well, due to her personal experience with her own family.

“I understand a lot of the struggles that [everyday Americans] are going through. After my father’s heart attack, we thought he was going to die, he couldn’t work anymore, and it was very hard for our family to get by. So I can understand what it’s like to have to struggle to make ends meet, and to try to work, and also raise a family, so I think that knowledge of the struggles of the American people, I think I can help make policy that addresses their issues.”

She is also not focused on an attack campaign towards her opponent, Senator Scott, but rather wants to focus on promoting her policies.

“Some of the major differences between Tim Scott and I are that he is opposed to abortion. Whereas I think it should be made into a federal law to better protect a woman’s right to an abortion, he does not. He also does not believe in climate change, and supported Trump drawing out of the climate agreement. I think that we need to take action on climate change as, it’s only going to get worse.”

When asked about her party leader, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Warren spoke out in support for her. “I trust Nancy Pelosi’s decisions, but I believe in the end the most important thing we can do to achieve success would be to be unified and work together.”
