Yesterday, Tim Scott announced that Susan Collins would be his running mate. Scott has taken a very moderate approach to his Republican campaign thus far, but adding Collins may not help. She is a very moderate Republican, with some progressive views, including stronger foreign policy, better sex education, and public service.
On top of this, Collins is interested in working with Democrats and attempting to pass bipartisan legislation. She says that there is animosity on both sides of the political spectrum and hopes not to add to this gridlock.
The only problem with this aspect of the Scott/Collins campaign is that they may lose a good amount of Republican voters to the Cruz/Graham campaign. Ted Cruz and Lindsey Graham have taken a very conservative approach to their campaign, talking about abortion, immigrants, and even starting their press conference with a prayer.
With many of the Democratic voters already leaning towards Elizabeth Warren and her campaign, it may be hard for Tim Scott to garner enough votes to win, especially with the moderate addition of Susan Collins. Will Tim Scott change his stance in the debate to appeal to more Republicans? Will he split the Republican party and take away Warren votes? Only time will tell.
